The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is a stunning high-altitude trek in Uttarakhand that takes trekkers to the source of the holy Ganges River. Gaumukh, meaning "cow's mouth," is the glacier’s snout from which the Ganges originates. This trek, extending further to Tapovan, offers trekkers dramatic landscapes, the majestic sight of Mt. Shivling, and vast meadows surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Known for its challenging terrain, this trek is perfect for seasoned trekkers looking to experience the spiritual and scenic beauty of the Himalayas.

Day 1: Arrival in Gangotri (Drive from Dehradun, 240 km)
  • Arrive in Dehradun in the morning and drive to Gangotri, passing through scenic mountain roads and beautiful landscapes.
  • Check into your guest house in Gangotri and acclimatize to the altitude.
  • Altitude: 10,055 feet
Day 2: Acclimatization Day in Gangotri
  • Spend the day exploring Gangotri, visiting the famous Gangotri Temple, and acclimatizing to the altitude.
  • Overnight stay in Gangotri to help with acclimatization.
  • Optional short hikes around Gangotri.
Day 3: Gangotri to Chirbasa (Trek)
  • Begin the trek following the Bhagirathi River along scenic trails with views of snow-capped peaks.
  • Arrive at Chirbasa, a beautiful forested campsite surrounded by pine trees.
  • Trek Distance: 9 km (5–6 hours)
  • Overnight stay in tents at Chirbasa.
  • Altitude: 11,700 feet
Day 4: Chirbasa to Bhojbasa
  • Continue trekking alongside the Bhagirathi River with the landscape gradually becoming more barren and rugged.
  • Reach Bhojbasa, the last camping site before Gaumukh, where you’ll witness magnificent views of Mt. Shivling and Bhagirathi peaks.
  • Trek Distance: 5 km (4–5 hours)
  • Overnight stay in tents at Bhojbasa.
  • Altitude: 12,450 feet
Day 5: Bhojbasa to Gaumukh and Tapovan
  • Trek to Gaumukh Glacier, the source of the Ganges, with its spectacular views of the glacier and surrounding peaks.
  • From Gaumukh, continue the challenging ascent to Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow with views of Mt. Shivling, Meru, and other peaks.
  • Trek Distance: 10 km (7–8 hours)
  • Overnight stay in tents at Tapovan.
  • Altitude: 14,640 feet
Day 6: Explore Tapovan and Surroundings
  • Spend the day exploring Tapovan, famous for its stunning meadows, panoramic views, and serene environment.
  • Optional short hike to nearby peaks or glacier points, or relax and take in the majestic views of Mt. Shivling and Bhagirathi peaks.
  • Overnight stay in tents at Tapovan.
Day 7: Tapovan to Bhojbasa (Return Trek)
  • Begin the descent from Tapovan back to Bhojbasa, retracing your route along the glacier.
  • Trek Distance: 10 km (5–6 hours)
  • Overnight stay in tents at Bhojbasa.
Day 8: Bhojbasa to Gangotri and Drive to Dehradun
  • Trek back from Bhojbasa to Gangotri, completing your trek.
  • Trek Distance: 14 km (6–7 hours)
  • After reaching Gangotri, drive back to Dehradun.
  • Expected arrival in Dehradun by late evening.
